Kitchen Flooring Choices
Make sense of variety, durability and affordability
Choosing the floors for your kitchen will offer many options from material, installation, price and design preferences.
Installing a kitchen floor may be the most important part of your kitchen remodeling. After all, your cabinets and appliances rest on it
and an average looking floor can make everything else in the kitchen appear drab. Overdo your flooring design and it will overpower the rest of the kitchen.
Plan accordingly and shop wisely.
View our section on Floor Underlayment for choosing the correct underlayments for your tile installation.
Our compiled list of popular flooring materials
- Laminates - Top design layer is made of paper and usually emulates wood or stone. The base is a manufactured, compressed wood material. This
type of flooring is quite durable and relatively quiet.
- Ceramic and Porcelain - These are decorative tiles with porcelain being the stronger of the two, but also more expensive. Cleaning can sometimes be an issue.
- Hardwood Floors - The cadillac of kitchen floors comes in a wide variety of choices from maple, cherry, oak, hickory, birch and more. Wideboard flooring is available in some hardwoods
also.
- Linoleum Tiles - This tile comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It is very durable and quiet and is fairly cheap.
- Vinyl - Sheets and tiles can be quite decorative and provide a comfortable choice in flooring. Advantages include price, installation and it is easy to clean. View our guide on
installing Self stick vinyl tiles.
- Stone - Marble, granite and slate are some of the choices for this type of flooring. Drawbacks include price, installation and weight of the stone must be supported. View our guide on stone floor tiles for some comparison ideas on installing and caring for your stone floor.
- Glass Tiles - Relatively new for a flooring choice. Typical square pattern designs are common.
Remeber, Floors go down first!
Before settling on your kitchen flooring material, consider how much durabilty you need, how much installation will be and how easy maintenance
will be for your flooring choice.
